IMTA THEORY EXAM |
Rules and Information |

A written and aural Theory Exam is given at the IMTA Piano Pre-College District Auditions. The material covered is outlined on the following Theory Study Guide pages for Levels A through F. These guides are designed to assist teachers in the preparation of their students for the District Audition Theory Exam.

LEVEL A STUDENTS
All students entering District Auditions in Level A will be offered an optional exam. Teachers will determine the readiness of each student and indicate on the Auditions Registration Form whether or not the student will be taking the Exam. Students may be declared winners and receive “1” ratings in either case.

LEVELS B through F STUDENTS
All students entering District Auditions in Levels B through F must take the required Music Theory Exam for their level. Failure to take the required Theory Exam will automatically disqualify a student from becoming either a winner or an alternate.

Students must score at least a 50% to be eligible to be awarded a “1” rating. A score of 65% must be attained to be declared a winner or an alternate for their level. In the event of a tie, the adjudicator will use the Theory Exam scores to determine the winner.

THEORY AWARDS
All students in levels A through F receiving a score of 90% or higher on their Music Theory Exam will be named to the Music Theory Honor Roll which is published in the IMTA Magazine. They will also be awarded a Theory Honor Roll certificate suitable for framing.
