Regulations
1. A written and aural music theory test covering the material outlined in the IMTA Piano Precollege Music Theory Study Guide will be administered to Levels A-F on the day of the district audition at the auditions site.
2. Level A students will be offered an optional exam and are eligible for the theory honor roll if they choose to take the test. Levels B-F students will take a required exam. Failure to take the required theory test will automatically disqualify a student from becoming either a winner or an alternate at the district level.
3. Levels B-F students must receive a minimum score of 50% in order to be awarded a “I” rating: a minimum score of 65% is required to be named a winner or alternate at the district level. In the event of a performance tie, the adjudicator holds the option to break the tie through the theory grade in order to determine a winner.
4. All practice exams will be available by October 1 for the current year on the IMTA website.
5. An aural (ear training) exam is a required portion of the theory exam. This must also be issued to each student at the audition site. This must be issued "live". Any center wishing to use a CD for the ear training portion must contact the theory chairperson by September 1 so the CD can be mailed out at least a month prior to the date of the auditions.
6. Any student receiving a score of 90% or higher at any level will be issued a certificate and placed on the theory honor roll published list.
