2009 Recipient, MTNA Foundation Fellow

The Iowa Music Teacher’s Association is proud to present Dr. William David as a 2009 MTNA Foundation Fellow.  Dr. David’s many contributions to IMTA over the years have helped to shape our association and contribute to its success.

Dr. David joined IMTA in 1972, and became involved in state activities almost immediately.  He served as the Chairman for IMTA state conventions in 1974, 1981, and 1985, helping to organize the annual event.  From 1978 to 1981 he was chair of the IMTA contest repertoire committee, undertaking the important job of helping to coordinate the addition of new pieces to the Iowa piano auditions syllabus.  Dr. David has also served in leadership positions, as state President from 1991 to 1993, and on the board of directors almost continuously from 1981 to the present.

Dr. David has also received awards from the Iowa Music Teacher’s Association, including the Distinguished Service Award in June of 2000 for his many contributions to both his local association, Music Teachers of Central Iowa, and to the state association.  In June of 2001, he received the Certified Teacher of the Year Award, again for his many contributions to his local association, and to the state.

Currently, Dr. David holds the position of Editor-in-Chief of The Iowa Music Teacher, IMTA’s quarterly journal, which is anticipated by many state members every few months!  The journal helps members across the state keep in touch with what is happening in the world of technology, new music, results of district auditions, information on the yearly state conference, and much more.

In addition to his many contributions to IMTA, Dr. David also serves as a UniversityProfessor and is the assistant chair of the department of music at Iowa State University in Ames.  He began his professional career at Iowa State in 1972 after receiving his Doctor of Musical Arts degrees summa cum laude in piano performance from the University of Michigan.  During his tenure at Iowa State, David has served on many committees representing both the school of music and Iowa State.  In 1976, he became a founding member of the Ames Piano Quartet, which is still in residence at Iowa State University.  The ensemble has performed over 250 concerts in more than 35 states as well as in Canada, Mexico, France, Austria, Taiwan and Cuba, and has recorded several albums as well.

Dr. David has been recognized several times by Iowa State, and has received awards including the Outstanding Academic Advisor award by ISU College of Sciences & Humanities in 1980, the Superior Achievement in Creative Activity awarded by the ISU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1995, the Iowa State University Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement in Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity in 1999, and the Regents Faculty Excellence Award in 2003.

Dr. David fills in his free time with an annual solo performance, concerts as a collaborative artist with colleagues, and performances with the Ames Piano Quartet.  We are thankful and extremely appreciative that a person so busy finds the time to touch so many people in our state through his many activities with IMTA.  We hope he continues to share his time with us for years to come!  Congratulations and many thanks to our friend and colleague, Dr. William David.
