The University of Iowa Collegiate Chapter

The University of Iowa MTNA Student Chapter was founded in September 2004. It frequently participates in a variety of activities aimed at serving others through music related functions, and it promotes the value of music among chapter members and the community. The members of UIMTNASC have demonstrated a strong social obligation by holding two benefit concerts in 2005. The Tsunami Relief Benefit concert took place February 5, and proceeds of $2,355 were donated to the American Refugee Committee’s “Fishing Boat Project,” which replaces boats lost by Thai fisherman in the tsunami. The second event took place in October, was a benefit for victims of Hurricane Katrina. It raised $1,200, which was donated to the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts.

UIMTNASC also has worked to foster the musical interests of young community members that include providing the United Action for Youth of Iowa City with a new keyboard in the Spring of 2007. They also have partnered with the Iowa chapter of MusicLink which provide free music lessons to underprivileged youths. The UI collegiate chapter has also sponsored two pedagogy workshops at the Voxman School of Music.

In 2006 the UIMTNASC was selected MTNA Collegiate Chapter of the Year. The following year they gave a very successful group presentation at the 2007 MTNA National Conference in Toronto. For more information please contact Dr. Alan Huckleberry.
